Dynamic vs Condenser Microphones: Which One Do You Actually Need?

The short answer: it depends on the room. Here's how to decide without guessing.
A dynamic microphone like the Shure SM58 is built to reject everything except what's right in front of it — background noise, room echo, the drummer three metres away. That makes it the right choice for live vocals, stage use, and anywhere the room isn't acoustically treated.
A condenser microphone like the Audio-Technica AT2020 is far more sensitive. It captures detail and air that a dynamic mic simply can't, which is exactly why it's the standard for studio vocals, podcasting and acoustic instrument recording — but only in a quiet, controlled room. Put a condenser mic on a noisy stage and it will faithfully capture the noisy stage.
If you're recording at home without a treated room, don't assume a condenser mic is automatically the upgrade — a dynamic mic placed close to the source often gives a cleaner result with a lot less background noise to fight in the mix.
Our rule of thumb: stage and events, go dynamic. Quiet room and detail, go condenser. Most working musicians in Nairobi end up owning both.
